چکیده

S–P travel-time residuals and receiver-function images are used to infer the Vp/Vs (compressional to shear wave velocity) ratio of the lithospheric mantle beneath southern African and the topography of the underlying 410-km discontinuity. Low Vp/Vs ratios provide evidence independent of geochemical observations for a highly depleted root (Mg#f92–94) beneath the Kaapvaal craton. The receiver-function images, on the other hand, consistently show a flat 410-km discontinuity beneath the entire array. This observation, after combined with the results of geodynamical modeling, allows us to place limits on the thickness of this chemical boundary layer, which is between f160 and f370 km. Mantle seismic structure beneath the Kaapvaal and Zimbabwe Cratons

We present results of seismic tomography for a broad region of southern Africa using data from the seismic component of the Kaapvaal Project, a multinational, multidisciplinary experiment conducted in the late 1990s. Seismic images provide clear evidence of mantle structures that mimic the surface geology across the region and provide important constraints on subcrustal structure associated wit...

Tectospheric structure beneath southern Africa

P-wave and S-wave delay times from the broadband data of the southern Africa seismic experiment have been inverted to obtain three-dimensional images of velocity perturbations in the mantle beneath southern Africa. High velocity mantle roots appear to extend to depths of at least 250 km, and locally to depths of 300 km beneath the Kaapvaal and Zimbabwe cratons. Thick roots are confined to the A...

Seismic anisotropy, mantle fabric, and the magmatic evolution of Precambrian southern Africa

The observed seismic anisotropy of the southern African mantle from both shear-wave splitting and surface wave observations provides important constraints on modes of mantle deformation beneath this ancient continent. We find that the mantle anisotropy beneath southern Africa is dominated by deformational events in Archean times occurring within the lithosphere, rather than present-day processe...

Characteristics of mantle fabrics beneath the south-central United States: Constraints from shear-wave splitting measurements

New shear-wave splitting measurements at permanent broadband seismic stations in the south-central United States reveal the orientation and degree of polarization of mantle fabrics, and provide constraints on models for the formation of these fabrics. For stations on the stable North American craton, correspondence between observed polarization direction of the fast wave and the trend of Proter...

Shear wave tomography of China using joint inversion of body and surface wave constraints

[1] The India-Eurasia collision and the decratonization of the North China Craton have drawn much attention from the scientific community. Here we provide the first large-scale S wave velocity model for China (CH11-S) based on constraints from both teleseismic surface and body waves. We take advantage of the recent deployment of the 140 permanent stations of the Chinese Digital Seismic Network ...
